July 27, 2008
I will be Austin Clarke's guest at the Leacock Summer Festival in Orillia. Austin will be hosting — and serving as chef — the Bajan Birthday Barbecue which is the crowning event of the weeks’ activities. Along with his other guest, David Chariandy, I will be giving a reading as part of the evening’s entertainments. If you want to join us, book in advance — this event usually sells out!
Other News…
I have enrolled in the Humber College Creative Writing by Correspondence program for 2008. My mentor will be Giller Prize winning author David Bergen. My plan is to work on my next novel, The Country Wife (working title!). Very little of this project exists at this point in time; there is an early — jejune — version in my drawer (it was the first thing I wrote when I began writing seriously), and perhaps 30-40 pages of sketches. The point is to challenge myself to make/find time to crank out the pages on a regular basis — or kiss $2,600 and a special learning opportunity good-bye!
In the Dark
My short story, "Drowning Man", is included in the anthology In the Dark: Stories of the Supernatural, published October 2006 by Tightrope Books.

My short story, The Wreck of the Waubuno, was published in Grain, Vol. 32 No. 4.
A bit of trivia: it derives from my experiences at Camp
Hurontario,
in Georgian Bay south of Parry Sound. Margaret Atwood, in her youth, had
worked there as a waitress (!), which experience also found its way into
one of the short stories in her collection, Wilderness Tips.
